Bee Gone
Picture of Honey BeeWhere have all the bees gone?
Over a third of honey bee colonies have died and scientist would like to know why. This is serious because bees pollinate up to as much as 30 percent of our nations food supply. In the past 25 years the honeybee population of the U.S. have declined by more than half. When bees go so does food. Researchers estimate one of every 3 bites of food relies on bee pollination. Researchers nationwide are investigating this phenomenon. Some say it could be caused by pollution others say cell phones.  Some claim pesticides, parasites, and a virus. But they all agree that no bee is bad to see. They say that mature bees are leaving their hives and the queens and young ones die soon afterward. There was one story of a beekeeper that a hive he managed held about 12,000 bees. In less then 3 weeks that number declined to 100. Researchers are afraid that our changes in the environment are causing this problem and many other problems as well.
