A Day Spent With Ducks by Justin Hoffman

A Day Spent With Ducks

Hello All,

Being on a fishing hiatus for the winter months has allowed me more time to enjoy wildlife photography. And when you are a “nature nut” like myself, documenting your day in the outdoors has become a great pastime.

I spent the last two days trying my hand at duck photography. The colours of many of these birds are wondrous, and catching one in flight, although somewhat tricky, can provide you with a rewarding image. I have much work to do on the in-flight shot but I’m fairly certain these ducks aren’t going anywhere.

These were taken on the Ontario side of the Ottawa River and are all drake or hen mallards.

This next sequence of four shots shows a drake mallard “stretching” his wings. I used a continuous shutter to capture these.

This next four-shot sequence shows a drake coming in to land. Neat to see how they utilize their wings as air brakes.

Justin

A Portrait Of the Deer in the Woods By Justin Hoffman

Hello All,

Sometimes you get lucky when carrying a camera. What was supposed to be a day scouring the Gatineau escarpment for eagles, turned into a wonderful photo opportunity when two does spent more than twenty minutes posing away. Best part was – they were no more than fifteen feet from me the whole time!

Here are a few of the more than 300 images I shot. Enjoy!

A Walk in the Woods

Hello All,

With the four inches of snow that fell yesterday still blanketing the ground,

I took the opportunity to head to a favourite hiking spot to do a bit of photography

and animal tracking. The day before the storm I was able to see four doe,

three grouse, and hundreds of geese in just under two hours.

Hopes were high that I would see more today.

This spot is less than 10 minutes from my home in Ottawa, and borders one of the busiest highways,

but the amount of wildlife to be seen is certainly amazing. Urban wildlife at its best.

The snow revealed track after track – rabbit, deer, coyote, turkey, and porcupine.

Makes you wonder how much activity happens during one twenty-four hour period!

I was hoping to get some shots of deer on this outing. Knowing the freshly cut corn field

would be garnering a lot of attention, I decided to hunker down in a small section of stalks

that still remained standing. This would allow me a great vantage point to the field, and the

two tree lines along the edge. A perfect natural blind for photography

And the reason why the deer and other animals were flocking to this field:
