Black Bear Sightings In Lower Wisconsin
![]()
Black bear are being sighted in lower Wisconsin and the DNR has confirmed some of those sightings. The numbers appear to be growing. The Wisconsin DNR has relocated a few back up north to try and keep them out of areas where more people live. But they keep showing up. In most cases black bears are shy of humans. Although there have been a few incidents where they have attacked. But no attacks in lower Wisconsin. Attacks are rare from black bears, but they are a wild animal. A mother sow bear with cubs could be a threat if you encounter them to close. Any wild animal can be a threat. However because bears are large, they sometimes appear to be more threatening to humans, then they really are.  It is best to contact wildlife officials if you should see one.
They really want nothing to do with humans. However should you see one in an area where they generally do not live, do not attempt to go by it.  Just give it space and contact wildlife services or a local DNR as soon as you can. Even if it is not at that particular moment. In an area where there may be a lot of traffic along a roadway in between wooded areas can be a problem. For a bear struck by a truck or car can cause a lot of damage. You may want to consider slowing down in those areas. Especially at night. Also where humans dominate and more of our garbage is left, bears can tear things up looking for food.
Their animals of instinct like most animals. We live with bears every day somewhere. So it has been proven that we can. However if their not understood, then we could be the ones making the mistake. So the best thing to do is contact local authorities as soon as you can. Especially if you live in lower Wisconsin where bears should not be.
