Deer Hunting in Wisconsin By The Wisconsin DNR

Current Focus

Wisconsin is recognized as one of the premier deer

hunting states in the nation as Wisconsin is home to

a thriving deer herd. Wildlife habitat changes

during the past century due to farming, logging, and urban expansion have led to the evolution

of new method for managing our deer populations in an attempt to control their numbers

under a wide array of habitats and social conditions.

Wildlife biologists in Wisconsin have developed

population models for deer. The model depends on information gathered primarily

from the hunters themselves. Such information includes the actual number of deer harvested

annually, and the sex and age of each animal. When applied to a specific geographical "unit,"

it is possible for biologists to accurately estimate the number of deer living in that unit. They can

then estimate the numbers that may be harvested to keep populations at healthy levels that are

socially acceptable to both hunters and non hunters alike. For more information, please

feel free to read Wisconsin deer management program  [PDF 1.72MB], The Issues

Involved in the Decision-Making."

Dean claims that he does not

have concern about that disease

effecting the deer herd like he did back then.

The deer weighed about 140 lbs.

Hunting in Wisconsin by the Wisconsin DNR

In the months leading up to the various Wisconsin seasons,

hunters across the state will anxiously await for their favorite time of year. Time spent honing

shooting skills, readying equipment and scouting the land for game are enjoyable and can pay off

when the season opens. Bonds with family and friends strengthen during the hunting seasons as

old traditions continue and new ones begin. And of course, everyone

is wondering what the season will bring.

Wisconsin offers a variety of hunting opportunities -

from the big game of white-tailed deer and black bear to

the smaller game of wild turkey and waterfowl.

We Cannot Manage Without hunters. But what about the wolves?

If the wolf population keeps growing in northern Wisconsin.
Could the question occur, Should we open
up a legal hunt on wolves to help control their population?
The photo you see  here is the results of a doe attacked by wolves in someones backyard in Mercer Wisconsin.
