Arts Big Buck

I remember hunting in Northern Wisconsin with my buddy Art and his kids on the opening weekend of the deer gun season. Here in Wisconsin we hunt Whitetail Deer. There are no black tail deer or Stag deer or whatever. There is whitetail deer.  Now don't take me the wrong way. I like black tail deer and stag deer and other deer species. I am only saying that we do not have those species in Wisconsin. Only  whitetail deer here. But some big ones at that.  At any rate. Art had belonged to one of those hunt clubs.  You know, pay by the year hunting properties.

The properties that someone may own a lot of land and they rent out to hunters. So many hunters per year. The kind where you have it reserved for one weekend or during the week. Then someone else may have it reserved for another weekend or during an opposite week. The land itself is pretty awesome because it is still like hunting public land. They usually remain on plenty of Acres. So they are, or can be just as difficult as public land hunts. Plus they usually join up against other wooded areas that add to the challenge of the hunt. But what is nice about them is there may be a food plot on the properties for the deer to come feed .

At any rate. His son Nate had taken me to what looked to be a good spot to sit opening morning. I did not know the area so I went with the experience who did. I did not tree stand hunt that weekend because the land was all new to me and Nate knew of a good spot that I could sit on the edge of a swamp.  They had known about a fairly nice size buck that was supposedly in that swamp.  So I sat on a camo ground seat on one edge of that swamp.  Nate went off to another area he was familiar with.  As day light started breaking. I could see better around me. I was able to spot deer runs and some branches with old back rub on them.  It was awesome.  I sat for hours as quite as a church mouse. Looking around a bit. Waiting and praying for that buck.

However that is not how it always works. About 10:00 A.M.  Nate came walking in by me very quietly. He asked if I had seen anything. But I did not. So we decided we would start walking toward the food plot to see if we could spot any deer moving about. As we were walking away from the edge of the swamp we heard two loud gunshots. Then we heard two more. Then one more. What the hell?  I said. We walked into the direction of those shots when we saw two blazed orange bodies standing out in the swamp. As we approached them closer Nate said. That’s dad and Amber. Art and his daughter were looking down.  As we approached closer art disappeared out of site as Amber stood there looking down.  When we got upon them Art stood up with a big Grin. Check this out he said.  We looked down to see his nice big 10 Point Buck. It definitely had some size to it.  It must have weighed 200 plus pounds. The gut pile was laying close. Art already attempted to drag it out of the swamp.

We had an ATV but it would have been risky sending someone on ahead to drive it back in this swamp. Because even we were sinking a bit as we dragged that buck. It was a good thing we had Arts buddy Todd with us on this day as well.  Because it was no cake walk dragging that deer through those rolls of water and mud.  Art and Todd would drag then Nate and I would drag. It was work. But what a hunt it was. Opening morning. Art had that 10 pointer down.  As for the rest of that weekend.  Nate and I were able to sneak up close to a few standing does. But not quite close enough.  But that’s OK.  We were still able to continue our hunt in our county when we returned home.

That did work out well for us.  I took a Spike Horn.  Plus Nate took a nice size Doe. Bigger then my spike Horn.   Throughout that deer season Art took another huge Doe and was abler to get a larger Buck during the late Bow Season. Which is another story for another time.  Gotta love that deer hunting.
