Hunting Small Game

Throughout the years I have enjoyed many small game hunts.  From Cottontail rabbit, to snowshoe hare, to squirrels, ducks, geese, grouse, woodcock, to coyote. It's all been fun and a great time. Many memories that will last me my lifetime. I can't say enough about the countless hours in the great outdoors on these hunts. As every hunter knows, it's not just hunting that's the thrill. But it's also the involvement in being in the outdoors. There is just something captivating about them moments. The thrill of the hunt almost seems as if God is walking the field with me when I am out there.Â

However as fascinating and thrilling as it may seem there are rules and regulations to small game hunts. Some of those rules and regulations  do not apply to every state.  My small game hunts took place in Wisconsin . So for the sake of hunting regulations here are some of Wisconsin hunting rules. For water fowl hunts such as Geese and Ducks You need a small game license and a water fowl stamp or a duck or goose stamp. For smaller game such as woodcock or grouse you need a small game license only. Also for hunting this game you need a good shot gun and bird shot. As for Squirrels or Coyotes, Rabbits and snowshoe hares a small game license and shotgun with 12 gauge or 20 gauge shells are sufficient enough.  You can use a 22 rifle on Squirrels and coyotes. Coyotes can be hunted year round.
All small game mentioned in this article can only be hunted during their hunting seasons. Always check the hunting regulations. I believe in Wisconsin Coyotes are year round. As for waterfowl, squirrels and rabbits they are not year round.   Squirrels offer a delicious dark meat to them. When cleaned and prepared correctly they can make a vary tasty almost gourmet meal. The same with Geese.and quail in which I almost forgot to mention. Coyotes on the other hand are hunted for their fur. In which can bring in money to the hunters or trappers. who go after them. There population numbers seem to be doing well and they can be a big nuisance and cause a lot of problems where humans inhabit an area. especially if you own a pet. Coyotes have been known to go after pets. Although attacks on humans are rare there has been a small number of them

But as far as hunting small game. It can be as exciting as big game hunts to some. I myself enjoy the big game hunts. Such as the whitetail deer or Elk. But I'll do small game hunts any day. You do not have to hunt small game with a dog. But when retrieving birds you may want to . Even if it means hunting with someone who has a dog if you do not. I have hunted grouse, and ducks, even pheasants without a dog. But I do not advise that as a good idea. I have lost some birds that way.  That is why a good hunting dog can come in handy for smaller game. But not for coyote hunting. Cottontail rabbits and squirrels can be one of the least expensive hunts and a lot of fun. I have had good times with my cousin and some friends hunting cottontails in farm fields even without a dog. Some warm camo clothing with just a bit of blazed orange and a small game license and a cheap 22 rifle was one of my first experiences hunting cotton tails.   Just being out there with the guys and having stories to share and the memories to last forever and is a great experience.. Those memories can and will make all the difference in ones life.  Also  more then likely will earn their respect for the great outdoors. A good idea would be to bring a young hunter on one of these hunts. it's a great experience.
