Live Tiger Found in Luggage

A two-month-old tiger cub was rescued by Bangkok airport officials in August after being
found sedated and hidden with a stuffed tiger toy in a woman's luggage. The cub, which
might not have survived the intended trip to Iran, was transferred to a
rehabilitation center. Tiger populations in Thailand and throughout Asia are critically
threatened by poaching and trading done to meet the international demand for tiger parts,
live tigers and tiger products. Read the full story.

Walruses Crowd Ashore

Driven by rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, warming in the Arctic is
causing a long-term decline in summer sea-ice cover. Over the last 30 years, the ice has
retreated at a rate of 11.2 percent per decade. This ice loss affects Arctic wildlife,
including walruses that depend on sea ice for access to offshore feeding grounds. As the
ice recedes into deep water with less available food, walruses are forced ashore in
higher concentrations that are potentially dangerous, especially to young pups. See more
photos and facts about how shrinking sea ice impacts Arctic wildlife.

Make Noise for Rhinos Day: Sept. 22

Every other day Africa loses a rhino to poaching. Fueled by demand for rhino horn in
Asia, poaching has increased dramatically over the last year-and-a-half. In fact, over
600 rhinos were poached across the African continent in the last five years. On September
22, we invite you to dust off your World Cup vuvuzelas and let out a
mighty sound as a symbolic call for immediate action to stop rhino poaching through
strengthened law enforcement and strict legal penalties. No vuvuzela? There are three
other ways to help too.
