The Wisconsin Musky

The muskellunge

(Esox masquinongy) is one of Wisconsin's most important and unique trophies. It is so highly valued that the State Legislature proclaimed it the official State Fish in 1955. More world records have been landed in Wisconsin than anywhere else. The state and world record is a tremendous 69 pounds and 11 ounce fish taken from the Chippewa Flowage.

A Weekend of Grouse Hunting

E-mail Print PDF

There are many hunting trips I remember.  One of them that I would like to share with you is a grouse hunt that I went on.

My friend Joe and I decided to do some weekend hunting for grouse in Vials County.  In a small area in Land O Lakes Wisconsin. That was a weekend to remember. I lived in a 3-bedroom Mobil home and my aunt and uncle had a little house right next to my home with a shared driveway. The property belonged to them.

During the hunting seasons, the guys would come up to the house and we would do some serious hunting. We shared a variety of hunts.  Mostly Whitetail Deer, both Archery, and gun season. One season when Joe and Art Sir, and Art Jr, showed up to the house, Joe asked me if I wanted to go grouse hunting the next morning.
Since I had a small game license, a 12 gauge and everything that was needed. I was ready. No need to guess what my response was.  You know I said yes.

Fly Fishing Anybody?

E-mail Print PDF

Once when I was a younger man, I remember visiting the Bond Falls Flowage.  In Paulding Michigan.  I had seen the area more then once. But one of the memories that stand out in my mind was the Fly Fishermen and women at the bottom of the falls standing in the running water that flowed off into the forest.  It was captivating. Very beautiful to see. It was in the spring of the year and getting toward dusk.  Picture a beautiful falls and the river bottom below with a wooden bridge in the background along with rolling hills of forest and a sunset and fly fisher men and women standing there in their Waders and back pouches  trying to catch a rainbow trout or brown trout in bottom clear waters.  It is a site to behold.

Black Bear Sightings In Lower Wisconsin

E-mail Print PDF

picture of black bear

Black bear are being sighted in lower Wisconsin and the DNR has confirmed some of those sightings. The numbers appear to be growing. The Wisconsin DNR has relocated a few back up north to try and keep them out of areas where more people live. But they keep showing up. In most cases black bears are shy of humans. Although there have been a few incidents where they have attacked. But no attacks in lower Wisconsin. Attacks are rare from black bears, but they are a wild animal. A mother sow bear with cubs could be a threat if you encounter them to close. Any wild animal can be a threat. However because bears are large, they sometimes appear to be more threatening to humans, then they really are.  It is best to contact wildlife officials if you should see one.

HUNTERS ARE GOOD FOR OUTDOOR CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT

A POINT OF VIEW

Hunters are needed to help manage wildlife. Hunting is a good way to help control the spread of disease, and thin heavy populated game that need to be tined out in certain areas.

My Winchester 30 30

E-mail Print PDF
Winchester Model 1892 Short Rifle 534162124, 44 Remington Mag, 20 in, Walnut Stock, Blue Finish

It's been many years since I had to part with my model 94 Winchester 30 -30, but I remember it well.  When I was a young man which I still feel like I am even if my body tells me different at times, I bought my first deer rifle.  It was my Winchester 30-30 model 94. Man, I loved that gun. I was young and it was awesome looking to me back then. Although it may still be awesome looking to some because it was an original built Winchester with screws and wood and steel. Not popped together with almost real material. It was the real Winchester with a saddle ring and all.
